Now that autumn is officially here, a fall hike to soak in the stunning fall foliage is an absolute must. There is no better place to experience the beauty of fall than the High Country, well-known for its gorgeous hikes. The only problem? Which trail to choose!
If you need help narrowing down your options, we polled our local experts –the Graystone Lodge team! Check out their top five favorite hikes and what makes them special…and they are all just a short drive from Graystone Lodge.
1. Flat Top Tower
Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 294 at Moses Cone Manor
“Flat Top Tower offers a unique vantage point for seeing the village of Blowing Rock once you get up to meadow on top of the mountain. At the very top, there is an actual fire tower you can climb and see several counties. There are also often horses on the trail, which makes it even more scenic!”
– Ben, General Manager
2. Beacon Heights
Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 305.2
“It is a perfect hike that is short enough for children and pets to enjoy with amazing views of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and Grandfather Mountain. It is also one of the best places to experience a magical Boone sunrise.”
– Selina, Revenue/Sales Manager
3. Elk Knob State Park
5564 Meat Camp Road, Todd
“I prefer Elk Knob State Park because the trails are easy to moderate, yet they still lead to some of the most beautiful views in the area. It’s a peaceful place to enjoy the outdoors!”
– Mike, Maintenance Manager
4. Hebron Rock Colony
Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 296.4 at Julian Price Park Picnic Area
“Hebron Rock Colony is my favorite hike, particularly the trail that leads to the waterfalls. There are several great places to take a dip or just relax and listen to the running water. Plus, the hikes to the falls are not very difficult so it’s definitely a hike for all ages!”
– Victoria, Guest Services Supervisor
5. Rough Ridge
Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 302.8
“I love Rough Ridge! It is the best hike with amazing views of the fall leaves as they are changing colors. There is also no better place to see the iconic Linn Cove Viaduct.”
– Justin, Owner of Graystone Lodge
