These five upcoming events offer something for families, couples, music fans, and groups of friends—all within a comfortable drive of Graystone Lodge.

1. Grandfather Mountain Highland Games

Dates: July 9–12, 2026
Location: MacRae Meadows near Grandfather Mountain in Linville
Admission: Daily and four-day tickets are available; prices vary by age and date

The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games bring Scottish heritage, music, athletics, dancing, and clan traditions to one of the High Country’s most striking outdoor settings. The four-day gathering begins Thursday afternoon and continues through Sunday, with a packed schedule of competitions and performances.

Visitors can watch professional and amateur athletes compete in traditional heavy events, including the caber toss and hammer throw. Highland dancing, piping competitions, sheepdog demonstrations, fiddling, Celtic music, and children’s programs add variety throughout the weekend.

General parking on the mountain is extremely limited. Most visitors need to park at an approved off-site lot and ride a shuttle to MacRae Meadows, so allow extra travel time before your chosen events. The official schedule lists gate and shuttle opening times for each day.

2. Doc & Rosa Lee Watson MusicFest

Date: Friday, July 17, 2026

Doc & Rosa Lee Watson MusicFest honors the musical legacy of Doc Watson, the Deep Gap native whose work helped shape American bluegrass, folk, country, blues, and gospel music.

The 2026 show features The Kody Norris Show, The Kruger Brothers, and Blue Highway. It will be held at the Appalachian Theatre in downtown Boone while the festival remains displaced from its usual Sugar Grove grounds following damage from Hurricane Helene. Proceeds will support the festival and help fund future events.

This is an all-ages event, although guests younger than 17 must attend with a parent or legal guardian. Reserved seating makes it smart to purchase tickets early, especially for groups hoping to sit together.

Graystone Lodge is only a few minutes from downtown Boone, so guests can attend the concert while still enjoying an easy return to their room afterward.

3. An Appalachian Summer Festival

Dates: June 27–August 1, 2026
Location: Multiple venues on the Appalachian State University campus
Admission: Varies by performance; some arts programs are free

An Appalachian Summer Festival is not limited to one concert or one weekend. The annual series brings music, theatre, film, dance, visual art, and family programming to Appalachian State University throughout June and July.

Several major performances remain on the 2026 schedule after the Fourth of July, including Gladys Knight on July 8, Straight No Chaser on July 10, Darren Criss on July 18, and Rick Springfield on July 23. Other scheduled programs include an outdoor sculpture walk, artist talks, chamber music, and a family performance of Peter and the Wolf.

Because events take place at different campus venues, confirm the location printed on your ticket. Performances may be held at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts, Rosen Concert Hall, the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, or another university facility.

Graystone Lodge is close to Appalachian State University, making it a practical choice for guests attending one show or building a multi-day arts getaway around several performances.

4. Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show

The Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show has supported equestrian traditions, education, and charitable causes for nearly a century. Its Saddlebred division took place in June, but two Hunter/Jumper weeks remain on the 2026 calendar.

The setting is a big part of the appeal. The Broyhill Equestrian Preserve offers a classic mountain atmosphere, and spectators can spend the day watching skilled riders and horses compete in hunter, jumper, and equitation classes.

You do not need to be an experienced equestrian to enjoy the show. It can be a relaxed and interesting addition to a family trip, couples’ getaway, or summer visit to Blowing Rock. Check the official schedule before arriving, as individual class times may change based on entries, weather, and competition needs.

5. High Country Beer Fest

Date: Saturday, August 29, 2026
General-admission tasting: 3:00–7:00 p.m.
VIP entry: 2:00 p.m.
Location: High Country Fairgrounds, 748 Roby Greene Road, Boone
Admission: Ticket required; ages 21 and older only

High Country Beer Fest closes out August with regional craft beverages, food trucks, live bands, local vendors, and educational seminars focused on fermentation.

Organizers expect approximately 40 to 45 breweries and around 1,700 attendees. General-admission guests enter at 3:00 p.m., while VIP ticket holders receive entry one hour earlier, priority seminar seating, a festival shirt, and access to a designated VIP area. The 2026 music lineup includes Possum Jenkins, Hellbender, and Carolina Reapers.

Tickets often sell out before the event, and they may not be available at the gate. Pets and anyone younger than 21 are not permitted. Guests should also plan transportation before arriving. Festival buses are scheduled to operate between the fairgrounds and Appalachian State’s Peacock Hall parking area.
