More than 25 years ago, The Ham Shoppe was a staple in Valle Crucis that attracted locals and visitors from all over. It was hands down the best place to dine for customized, one-of-a-kind sandwiches and a great place to shop for local provisions, jams, jellies, and more. When the bridge construction project forced The Ham Shoppe to close its doors in 2019, endless hearts were broken – no other local establishment offered a sandwich quite like The Ham Shoppe. It was simply irreplaceable.

Fast forward to 2024, we’re thrilled to share that the original mountain sandwich shop is back in the form of a food truck. This incredible spot not only has a permanent place in our hearts, but in our parking lot too…most of the time, that is. You can also find them sharing their mouthwatering sandwiches at local events.

The Ham Shoppe food truck offers the same nostalgic flavors and classic sandwiches that locals and visitors grew up on, as well as new chef-driven creations. Its new owner, Chef Denton Poteet, is one of the many locals who fell in love with The Ham Shoppe when his family visited the High Country from Nashville during his childhood.

When he learned that the business was for sale in 2022, he made the easy decision to purchase it from previous owner Steve Garret. Poteet embraced the opportunity to reestablish this local gem and make everyone’s hearts (and tummies) full again.

As a family-owned operation, Chef Poteet is a new dad, with his son being born last fall, who operates the business with his wife. Denton graduated from New York University before starting this endeavor he served as the executive chef at the Inn at Crestwood.

Poteet and his wife pride themselves on honoring the legacy of The Ham Shoppe and perfecting the art of creative, tasty, sandwiches using fresh, authentic ingredients. He has kept about 2/3 of the original menu, including popular classics like The Russian Mistress and the Valle Scorcher, while elevating old favorites with a new twist.

Each sandwich is paired with a choice of chips or the soup of the day like Whiskey Mushroom Soup. For the perfect ending, save room for one of their decadently delicious desserts such as the Cola-Berry shortcake or a Butterfinger pound cake cupcake.

We’re proud to partner with local businesses like The Ham Shoppe. If you’re a guest at Graystone Lodge, you can receive 10 percent discount off your meal when you show your key card.

It takes just one bite to understand the hype of how this local gem stole the hearts of locals and visitors of the High Country. We cannot wait for you to experience it for yourself!
